PEACCO–Nanoscale Thin Film Coating Technology Specialist
PEACCO ENTERPRISE CORP. (Taipei, Taiwan) has a patented technology - a simple, environmentally benign metal surface pretreatment process (the SOL-GEL method), which was originally developed for the metal adhesive bonding in Aerospace applications, instead of chemical grow on the oxide layer, this technology used an aqueous solution to apply on the metal to form a organic-inorganic hybrid thin film for protecting. This coating can be applied on the metal by many treated ways like dip, spin, spray, or roller coatings. After the coating process, an IR curing process is normally needed but no need for water-rinse process as in traditional conversion coating or anodizing processes. This organic-inorganic hybrid coating can chemically bond to the metal also can chemically bond to organic adhesives/paints; therefore, its adhesion of adhesives/paints on metal surface can be enhanced significantly by using this hybrid coating in-between. The microscopic photo indicates the dense nature of nanoscale coating is almost impermeable to oxygen and water, thus, the metal corrosion resistance can also be improved significantly. By modifying the composition of the coating solution, this technology can apply on many different kind of metals and alloys, to form a strong chemical bonding with the metal surface. This innovative technology can replace many existing conversion coating and anodizing processes for the metal surface treatment with many benefits such as much easier process and low facility cost as well as environmental benefit. That is so-called “green technology, green process and green products”.
One of the successful examples for this technology is the surface treatment process for magnesium alloys. It has been proven to have the following advantages:
1. | For magnesium die parts after traditional chromate conversion coating process (such as Dow 20), there is 15-40% surface corrosion for just 6-8 hours of salt spray test(ASTM-B117-95). For the thin film 3-5μm parts after PEACCO’s process, after 24-48 hours SST salt spray test, normally less than 5% surface corrosion can be found. The mechanism of corrosion prevention of traditional chromate process is to use the hexavalent chromate ion as the corrosion inhibitor, as long as the chromate ion lost in the environment by oxidation and humidity, its corrosion will happen dramatically. For Peacco’s process, the basic idea is to provide a thin and dense barrier layer to isolate the metal surface to avoid air oxygen and humidity interruption. That will actually provide the much better and long-lasting effect. |
2. | Traditional chromate processes need toxic and hazardous chemicals, therefore, extra cost for safety and pollution control is absolutely needed. But such spendthrift will not happen in Peacco’s process, where without toxic and hazardous chemicals we have been used. |
3. | There is no water needful after rinse process in Peacco’s process, thus, no need of huge scale treatment for chromate containing wastewater and solid waste like that has been used in the traditional chromate process. |
4. | Traditional chromate conversion top coating process will etch out the surface up to 20-30 µm, that will affect the precision of the die part dimension. Its dark brown nature of the chromate conversion coating will also affect the appearance of the die parts. However, Peacco’s process can provide a transparent coating film only for about 0.5-3µm thickness, therefore, the dimension and appearance of the die parts will not be affected. |

Due to the porous nature of the chromate conversion coating, the hexavalent chromate ion will diffuse to the environment, which is also the toxic mechanism of corrosion resistance to create potential secondary pollution and hazard to users and environment. However, this is no an issue for Peacco’s process like traditional chromate conversion coating, because of no heavy metal ions will be involved in our process.
